Campus Visit Tip: Reveal Outcomes

Posted by:

Each month the Experience Team from TargetX will share with you a Campus Visit Tip, Trend and Talk. All of the “three T’s” are designed to give you a bit of insight into the work we do, the people we work with and the places we pull our inspiration from. Here is this month’s “Tip”.

Reveal Outcomes

Open up a newspaper and you are bound to see an article that questions the value of higher education. Heck, this morning on the Today Show there was an entire segment on it. The articles and stories all ask the question “is college still worth it?”. It is the question on the minds of most families as they come to campus for a visit or ...

The golden rule of admissions travel

Posted by:

It’s been 10 years since my first travel season and I’m a bit sentimental about my time on the road for my Alma Mater Elon University. In those 10 years — much of it now with TargetX — I have stayed over 1000 nights in a hotel, flown nearly 750,000 miles, and driven enough miles that I could be on Mars with Curiosity.

Over the course of my travels, I have picked up lots of advice. ”Don’t stress when things on the road go wrong… It isn’t about the amount of college fair cards, it’s about the quality… Never leave your college fair table early.” The list goes on and on…

There is one piece of advice that I received before my ...

Time to start asking “why?”

Posted by:

As admissions professionals, we often go about doing things the same year after year…after year. We continue to do search the same way, we are still producing thousands of full-color glossy view books that we know students throw away, and we are still hosting the same events the way we have done them for years — no matter the outcome.

In today’s market where there are decreasing numbers of high school students, increasing options available after high school, disappearing budgets, reduced staff levels, more demands by your prospective students, more applications and more visitors, it is time to start asking “Why?”

I know it sounds like a simple question to ask but often we get caught up in the ...

This summer I am going to…

Posted by:

We are just days away from May 1 or May 2 as it might be this year, so I’d like to ask you a question.

What are you doing this summer?

I know thoughts of waves crashing and fruity frozen drinks with the warm sun shining might be the last things from your mind.  This is crunch time in the world of admissions.  Either you are holding your breath for the dust to settle on your class, or you are still running around trying to figure out how you are going to fill your class by the fall.  Maybe you should keep one eye on this year’s class and start focusing the other on May 2012.

It’s amazing to me how the summer ...

Waiting for the Dead Poets Society Moment

Posted by:

They come in all different sizes and all different levels of content.  Some give a specific route, others just a mandate on what to show.  Some give facts and figures (there are 1,314,649 books in the library), others read like a Hollywood script.  I am talking about the beloved tour guide training manual.

I wonder what the norm is for this manual?

After searching high and low, and talking to several schools, I have found one that is challenging the norm: Alfred University. They aren’t even calling it a manual, but rather a Reference Guide. Only a few pages long, it has information for the guides to reference – expectations, the tour route, a brief history of the buildings, list ...

Demystifing the Application Process

Posted by:

If you work on a college campus, you are an educator.  You may not teach a class as an admission professional, but you should take ownership to educate the school’s applicant pool.

Often we assume that people understand the process, but they don’t. We need to take time (either while on campus during a visit or via the web) to explain the process.

A recent email that went viral around the TargetX offices was this video from Centre College in Danville, KY. This is one way they educate their applicants.

Sure, it is a little tongue-in-cheek, but it is entertaining and it does educate their applicants on the process at Centre.

How ...

New Year's Resolutions to Improve the Campus Visit

Posted by:

Happy New Year!!!

Now that the decorations are down (maybe) and the sleep deprivation from being forced to stay awake until midnight has subsided (not really), it is time to think about 2011.  I know that some of you spent New Year’s Day thinking about your personal resolutions. Maybe you want to lose weight, watch what you eat (I am limiting myself to one Twix bar per week out of the snack basket on the plane), be more organized, or respond to emails in a more timely manner.  No matter what your personal resolutions are, I think you should add three more to the list.  These resolutions will help you improve the ever-important campus visit.  Call this your list of work ...

What should I wear?

Posted by:

I get asked some of the same “hot topic” questions about the campus visit from many of our campus visit clients and during the countless campus visit presentations that we do.  One question that keeps coming up:  “What should our tour guides wear?”

I ask a question or two in return.

“What do the students wear on campus to go to class?”
“What is most real and authentic to the student experience?”

In a recent issue of BusinessWeek (Let me disclose. Jeff Kallay forwards along the important articles) about the rise of Millennials in the workplace, I saw this cartoon and just had to share as we discuss the tour guide uniform.

“One Thing” to Improve Your Campus Visit

Posted by:

During today’s Free on Friday Webcast, our Experience Evaluator, Emily Welsh and I discussed the basics of the campus visit.  As we enter the fall semester, now is a great time to take a close look at how the most important recruitment activity stacks up. We gave viewers 10 “R” words to reinforce the basics of the campus visit.  They are:

  • Registration
  • Roads – Signage, parking, getting to Admissions.
  • R-Aesthetic – (Ok, we couldn’t come up with an R) Aesthetic is ground zero of the campus visit.
  • Reception – How does the Admissions space make your visitors feel?
  • Restrooms – They are one of the first and last places your visitors experience.
  • Reiterate – How are you delivering information to your visitor?
  • Route – What are you ...

What Smells?

Posted by:

Close your eyes and imagine driving down the highway on your way to work. Take a deep breath… what is that smell?  Could it be a peppery, juicy steak on the grill?

If you are driving down N.C. 150 outside of Moorsville, NC that might just be what you smell. Bloom Grocery Stores have built a billboard that emits that exact smell in an effort to engage your senses and sell more of their new line of steaks.

Now, I haven’t seen it (or smelled it) but the Charlotte Observer reports that the billboard will be grilling steaks until June 18.

We need to remember Adweek’s review of brand sense: “83% of ...

A Makeover in California

Posted by:

No, I am not going to talk about the latest spa treatment in Hollywood, or am I going to share with you who met who at the club in Santa Monica. I will leave hardcore reporting like that for all those magazines you find at the grocery store check-out.

I want to share with you an experience from my travel through the Los Angeles Airport (LAX) last week.   This is an airport that I have been in at least a hundred times in my life.  This trip through LAX was different, though. Upon landing at LAX, I was caught off guard by a change of the flow of traffic since my last visit.  I was inquisitive about the change.  Then I ...

MISSING: Godzilla used to promote ACAC Sessions

Posted by:

img_0460

Overland Park, KS: At approximately 8:00 AM CDT Jeff Kallay, TargetX’s Apostle of Authenticity, reported that Godzilla was found missing from the TargetX GPACAC Exhibit Booth. He said “I walked up to the table started to cry when I realized that he was missing.”

According to reports filed, Godzilla was last seen by exhibitors at approximately 5 PM CDT.

It is suspected that he was kidnapped by a roving gang of Admissions Counselors.

Godzilla traveled to Kansas from Atlanta to work with TargetX in the promotion of its session “Pecha Kucha – Japanese Efficiency for Better Campus Visit Presentations”.

According to Adrienne Bartlett, TargetX’s ...

What are your 3 things?

You aren’t a billionaire with a dream, nor are you a global brand that everyone recognizes.  So what can you learn from CNN, The Olympics, Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium?

These were questions we asked this year’s TargetX Xpert Summit participants.  Part of this two-day event in Atlanta was an experience excursion where we took everyone (all 115 clients in attendance) to the CNN Center, Centennial Olympic Park (did you know that the 1996 Olympics were in Atlanta?), the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium. We weren’t there to play tourists.  We wanted to see what we could learn from the experiences being hosted by these popular destinations and discover what might ...

The "Secret Menu" of the Campus Visit

Several fast food restaurants have created “secret” menus for their guests.  And though they shouldn’t, many campus visit programs have done the same.

The Not So Welcome… Welcome

We have all walked into the door of a store and found the clerk on the phone and just ignoring us. As a customer, it doesn’t feel very good, but that would never happen in college admissions, or would it?

"The TargetX Bowl" is down the drain!

Posted by:

The TargetX team had fun playing along during “The TargetX Bowl”. If you haven’t seen all the entries they are posted on the wall of our Facebook Page.

Several of you suggested we have a competition for the worst bathroom in admissions.  If you think you would be a winner to that competition, then I would suggest making some changes on your campus…

We had several schools submit their “best bathrooms”.  A huge thank you for those that participated.

Instead of naming just one winner we selected a couple of “grand prize” winners and a few honorable mentions.

The “Grand Prize” winners will be receiving a “Flushed Away Movie Party Pack” to party with your staff. The winners are:

Don't flush away your first impression!

Posted by:

Upon arrival, one of the first questions prospects and their families ask once they reach the admissions office or welcome center is “Where is the restroom?” No matter if a family has just gotten out of the car from traveling or has just returned from a tour, every visitor needs a “bio break” at least once while on campus.

This spring, during my travels to campuses, I have begun to notice a common theme: These restrooms are giving a horrible first impression.  I have seen amazing admissions spaces where attention has been paid to every detail — except that of the loo.  Much like your public spaces, these spaces “behind close doors” need to have the look and feel of your ...

Greetings from 35,000 Feet

I am blogging today from Delta flight 1006 en route from ATL to PHL on my way from the TargetX Atlanta office to the main office in Bristol, PA for a few days of meetings.

Wi-Fi hot spots are nothing new, they are on campuses, in coffee houses and can be found in tons of public places. For as much traveling as I have done in the past several years this is a first time I have had a “hot spot in the sky.”

I just couldn’t resist and had to share this “very cool” experience. Delta is in the midst of installing GoGo Wi-Fi on board its fleet of aircraft so passengers can check e-mail, surf the web, twitter, and ...

The Honest Campus Tour Guide

Posted by:

People often send us links with interesting reading about technology, authenticity, the campus visit, etc.  We welcome them and often enjoy reading them.

Last week I was caught off guard by a link I received. It directed me to the ever student popular, time-killing website, CollegeHumor.  It turns out there was an article posted by Comedian Steve Hofstetter on his “honest” view of the campus tour.  It is entertaining, maybe real to your campus and educational.

Here is his article edited for content and formatted to fit your screen:

Welcome, prospective students. I’m here to show you a very superficial version of what your life could be like for the next four years because I need the money. I don’t actually care if ...

What is in a name?

Posted by:

When I came to work for TargetX I had a long conversation with Jeff about my title.  As you know he is the Experience Evangelist. This is a perfect title for him being a graduate from Lee University and he really does preach The Experience Economy.  I even became one of his followers long before he had the official title.

My title as the Experience Evaluator is very much what I do.  Jeff mentioned in another blog entry that by definition, an evaluator is “an authority who is able to estimate worth or quality” and “an expert who appraises and assigns a worth to assets for which it is difficult to determine market value.” I spend time on campuses closely (and ...
